Unskilled Care: Assistance with ADLs (activities of daily living; bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, walking/transferring, etc.) and IADLs (instrumental activities of daily living; managing finances, shopping, preparing meals, managing medications, completing household tasks, driving, etc). Usually care and assistance needed to remain independent and active.
Skilled Nursing Care: Care and assistance provided by physical therapy, occupational therapy, nurses and nursing assistants, and speech therapy for rehabilitation of an acute or chronic health condition.
Payment Options for Unskilled and Skilled Care
Medicare: Does not cover unskilled care or assistance.
Medicaid: May cover unskilled care and assistance in the home if you meet eligibility guidelines.
Health Insurance: Private health insurance may cover unskilled care (depending on your individual policy), however, they most likely only cover skilled care for a short time period.
